Favorite moment: Hearing the thunder roll throughout the hike

Tucked deep in the heart of Sequoia National Park, the Congress Trail is one of those hikes that quietly captures your heart. It’s a 2.9-mile loop that winds through the Giant Forest, past towering sequoias that have been standing long before any of us were here. I started this hike in the late afternoon, when the sun was low enough to cast soft golden light between the massive trunks, giving the forest an almost enchanted glow.

The trail itself is mostly gentle—easy enough to let you truly look around instead of just down at your feet. Every turn seemed to reveal another giant, their reddish bark glowing against the deep green of the forest floor. Birds called from the canopy, the air was rich with that earthy forest scent, and aside from the soft crunch of my shoes, it was peacefully quiet.

But the calm didn’t last forever.

Just as I approached the last stretch of the loop, the sky shifted. A distant rumble echoed through the trees—low at first, then closer. Dark clouds rolled in faster than expected, and the light faded. The first fat raindrops landed like a warning, followed almost immediately by a full-on downpour. Thunder cracked overhead, making the ground vibrate beneath my feet.

There was something exhilarating about it. The rain poured through the branches, drenching everything in seconds. The soft forest trail turned slick, and the rich scent of pine and wet earth intensified. Most people had cleared out long before, so it felt like the forest belonged entirely to the storm and me. I quickened my pace but couldn’t help grinning—it was one of those wild, unexpected moments that make an ordinary hike unforgettable.

By the time I reached the trailhead, lightning was giving warning of the loud claps of thunder that were vibrating through the trees. The storm had passed as quickly as it came, although the rain continued on and off through the night. A glistening, misty stillness was left behind during the breaks in downpours. Drops clung to the ferns, and the massive sequoias stood unfazed, as if they’d seen a thousand storms just like this.

Sometimes, it’s the moments we can’t plan—the surprise thunderstorm at the end of a trail—that end up carving the deepest memories. Congress Trail gave me towering trees, golden light, and a stormy finale I’ll never forget.

Thanks for journeying with me!
